One of Griffith Council’s Youth Advisory Group (YAG) has been selected as a member of the NSW Youth Advisory Council (YAC) for 2025.

Passionate about mental health and women’s healthcare, particularly in regional areas, Shirine Nehme said she believed that youth engagement was key to driving positive change.

“The YAC and YAG mean a great deal to me,” Ms Nehme said.

“As someone from a multicultural farming town, it is an opportunity to represent my community and amplify the voices and concerns of rural youth.

“I hope to advocate for my community to the best of my abilities.”

Encouraged by Griffith City Council’s Youth Advisor, Ellie Andreazza, Shirine applied to be a member of the YAC and was officially selected on 18 October.

“Her persistent drive to be heard and passion to speak up for what she stands for, make her not just an ideal candidate for the ACYP YAC, but a powerful force for positive change within our community,” Ms Andreazza said.

“It’s an amazing opportunity for Shirine, to not only grow her skillset, but also amplify the concerns of our rural community.”

Griffith Mayor Doug Curran congratulated Ms Nehme on her achievement, noting the importance of youth representation in decision-making processes.

“Shirine’s involvement highlights the talent and leadership of our youth,” Mayor Curran said.

“We are proud of her efforts to advocate for the young people of Griffith.”

The 12-member YAC plays a crucial role in advising the NSW Government on issues affecting young people across the state.

The YAC meets regularly throughout the year to provide advice to the Minister responsible for Youth and the Advocate for Children and Young People on matters concerning young people.

Membership of the YAC gives young people like Ms Nehme a direct avenue of communication with the NSW Government, offering them the chance to contribute to shaping the future.

Griffith City Council’s YAG provides a vital platform for youth engagement within the community and opportunities like this one for young leaders such as Ms Nehme.

Initiatives such as ConnectYouth2680, YAG and the NSW YAC help shape future leaders.

Young people eager to get involved in the ConnectYouth2680 Youth Advisory Group can visit Council’s website or contact Youth Advisor Ellie Andreazza at ellie.andreazza@griffith.nsw.gov.au.
